APC UPS repair: alarms, beeping and battery faults

An APC UPS that beeps is usually telling you one of three things: it is running on battery, its batteries are near the end of their life, or it has a fault that needs a technician. Schneider Electric's manuals describe each case, and the display or the event log tells you which one you have. We diagnose and repair APC and Schneider units across Canada, three-phase and single-phase.

Key facts

What the beeping usually means

On an SRT, pressing any key mutes the audible alarms. The cause stays: on battery the runtime keeps counting down, and a battery or module alarm means the next outage may drop the load.

Before you call: what to note

Do not open the UPS or the battery cabinet. A battery string is a live energy source even with its breaker open.

When the replace-battery message will not clear

If the message stays after new batteries are installed, the usual causes are a battery module not fully seated or connected, a string that has not finished charging, a battery setting that does not match what was installed, or a charger fault. We check them in that order on site, then run a battery test once the string is charged.

How we repair APC units

On site we read the event log, test the batteries block by block, inspect the power modules, the static bypass and the fans, and test under load where it is safe to do so. Parts are quoted before they are fitted. On a Galaxy VS with the Live Swap label, a power module can be inserted or removed in any operation mode. Without the label, Schneider Electric's manual sends power module replacement to Schneider Electric, and other repairs are planned around maintenance bypass, when the batteries are not available as backup.

Battery faults are the most common repair, and the on-site process is covered in battery repair and replacement work; for a repair estimate on any brand, the repair service request page collects the model and symptom.

When repair is not the answer

For a discontinued MGE Galaxy, or when the repair approaches the cost of a new system, we quote both and you choose. Replacement planning: UPS end of life and replacement. A unit still covered by Schneider Electric's warranty should go to Schneider Electric first.

Common questions

Why is my APC UPS beeping?

Most often because it is running on battery: Schneider Electric's Smart-UPS SRT manual lists an audible alarm on battery as normal operation. A beep can also mean the batteries are near the end of their life, or a fault. Note the display text or the LED pattern before you call.

Can I just silence the alarm?

You can mute it: on an SRT, any key mutes the audible alarms. The cause stays, so check whether the unit is on battery and book a check if it is a battery or module alarm.

What does Battery condition is poor mean on a Galaxy VS?

Schneider Electric's manual defines it as a battery capacity lower than 50% and says the batteries should be replaced. Battery condition is weak means a capacity between 50% and 75%.

Do you repair single-phase Smart-UPS units?

Yes: SMT, SMX and SRT units, as well as three-phase Galaxy, Symmetra and Easy UPS systems.

What should we send with the request?

The model and serial number, the alarm text or a photo of the display, whether the load is on inverter, battery or bypass, and the battery age if you know it.

How quickly can you come?
