UPS service

UPS installation and startup

Installing a UPS is an electrical project: the feed, the protection, the bypass arrangement, the floor and the room all have to be right before the cabinet arrives. We survey the site, plan the work, place and terminate the system, and hand it over tested and documented. For new XPC and Delta systems we handle the startup ourselves. For brands whose warranty starts with a factory startup, we prepare the site and work alongside the manufacturer.

Key facts

How an installation runs

  1. Site survey. Load, available feed and breaker, distance to the panel, floor loading, access route, ventilation and room temperature.
  2. Electrical coordination. Upstream protection, cable sizes, the maintenance bypass arrangement and generator interaction are settled with your electrician or engineer before ordering.
  3. Delivery and placement. The cabinet, battery cabinets and any bypass panel are moved in, levelled and anchored where required.
  4. Termination and configuration. Power and control wiring, settings, alarm thresholds and network monitoring.
  5. Startup and handover. Functional checks, transfer tests, an optional load-bank test, and documentation for the people who will run the system.

What we need to quote is listed on our installation and configuration page.

Startup by the manufacturer

For many three-phase systems the warranty is tied to a startup performed by the manufacturer. Eaton, for example, requires product startup on its 9315, 93PM and 9395 families to be performed by its own service engineer or an agent, and for units installed in Canada its parts warranty runs 12 months from startup or 18 months from shipment, whichever comes first. Schneider Electric sells Galaxy VS units with startup included in the part number, for example "Start-up 5x8". Large new Vertiv systems are commissioned by Vertiv, which keeps the factory warranty intact.

In those cases we prepare the site so the factory visit passes the first time, coordinate the electrical work, and take over maintenance afterward. We never put a new unit's warranty at risk to save a visit.

New XPC and Delta systems

For XPC and Delta three-phase UPS, we supply, install and start up the equipment ourselves and stay on as the service provider, so one team owns the project from survey to the first maintenance visit.

Relocations and existing systems

Units out of warranty can be moved, re-terminated and started up again. A relocation is also the right moment to replace batteries and wear parts, update firmware and settings, and run a load-bank test before the system carries the critical load again.

Design questions to settle early

Sizing and supply questions often come before the installation itself; consultation, sales and installation support covers that earlier stage. For smaller rooms, installation advice for rack and tower UPS walks through the same decisions at a smaller scale.

Common questions

Do you commission new UPS systems?

Yes for XPC and Delta systems, which we supply and start up ourselves. For brands whose warranty depends on a factory startup, such as large new Vertiv systems or Eaton's 93PM and 9395 families, the manufacturer performs startup and we prepare the site and handle the electrical coordination.

Why does the manufacturer's startup matter?

The warranty often starts with it. Eaton's parts warranty in Canada runs 12 months from startup or 18 months from shipment, whichever comes first, and startup must be performed by Eaton or its agent.

Can you move an existing UPS to a new room or building?

Yes, for units out of warranty. We disconnect, move, re-terminate and start the system up again, and usually replace batteries and wear parts at the same time.

Do you do the electrical work?

We work with your electrician or engineer of record, or coordinate the whole scope. Electrical work is done by qualified electricians as provincial rules require.

What do you need to quote an installation?

The model or the load to protect, the available feed and breaker, the distance from the panel, floor loading, the access route and room conditions.
